Legend and History of Sankat Mochan Temple:

The Sankat Mochan Temple in Varanasi holds a rich history and a significant legend associated with its establishment.

Legend: The term “Sankat Mochan” translates to the one who relieves devotees from troubles and problems. This form of Lord Hanuman removes the darkness of fear and ignorance, bringing the light of knowledge and wisdom to the lives of devotees.

The temple was constructed in the mid-17th century by Goswami Tulsi Das Ji, the revered saint and poet who wrote the Ramcharitmanas. Legend has it that Tulsi Das Ji received inspiration from Sankat Mochan Hanuman to compose the Ramayan. He invoked Hanuman Ji through deep devotion and personally performed the Pratishta (consecration) of the Sankat Mochan Swaroop in the temple.

Initially, the temple was small, but in 1900, Pt. Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya Ji systematically reconstructed the temple. Since then, devotees from around the world visit the temple to pay their respects.

Divine Meeting of Goswami Tulsi Das Ji and Hanuman Ji: According to legend, while Goswami Tulsi Das Ji was in Kashi (Varanasi), he encountered a ghost while pouring water. The ghost revealed that meeting Shri Ram was possible through Hanuman Ji. Following the ghost into a dense forest, Tulsi Das reached a place now known as Sankat Mochan Temple. In deep worry, he prayed to Hanuman Ji, and the Sankat Mochan Swaroop appeared before him. The temple now stands at the site of this divine encounter.
